Remember how I was planning that party in honor of the release of Gears of War: Judgment and one of my best friend’s birthdays? Well, we had the party and it was quite the success! From personalized Gears of War lanyards for each guest, to the signature drink (imulsion of course) the party was one we’ll never forget!
(Can you tell I love party planning? This was a good practice run for Aliceana’s first birthday, I think her party theme will have a little less blood and gore though..)
I knew I had to have a wall of streamers as a back drop, but that it wasn’t going to be quite enough. So I added some tin foil cogs.
For these I simply took some lightweight cardboard (about the thickness of a cereal box) traced and cut out the shape I wanted and wrapped them in tin foil. I then hot glued them to string so we could hang them from the ceiling.
This is probably a little silly, but when we play Gears we always say “All I saw was pieces” when we execute a good shot, so I just had to make a printable with our coined phrase.
Of course I had to bake cookies shaped like Gears! More about my sugar cookies, and a recipe for my frosting here at my friend’s blog Arrow in the Eye.
I also made personalized lanyards, everyone had a character name for the night (luckily I knew everyone’s favorite characters). Underneath the character name it had their real name and a note that it was our friend’s birthday.
In case you were wondering, I was Cole. Cole Train is the best character ever.
Then there were the cupcakes. I am so in love with how the cupcake toppers turned out! I wasn’t sure what I was going to make for cupcake toppers, but my husband insisted I use body parts. So, I put them behind some blood spurts and on top of some red frosted cupcakes naturally.
These were funfetti cupcakes, it can’t be a fun party without funfetti!
(Never again will I attempt to dye frosting red. This took 2 bottles of food coloring, and lots of work, plus my hands and kitchen were red for quite a while!)
Oh, and this cake… Drool worthy, right?
So, the birthday boy was pretty picky when it came to cake. He insisted it be chocolate with coconut in the middle. So I did a little bit better than that. Naturally red velvet cake was a better choice, since the running theme was lots of blood red. So I made a red velvet layer cake with red frosting and coconut in the center, and a cream cheese coconut frosting. it was divine. I’ll talk more about the cake tomorrow.
Every occasion at our house requires seasoned pretzels. Honestly, I think everyone would be disappointed if these were missing. I featured them on my blog when I hosted my mom’s surprise party, check out the recipe here.
We also added a signature drink to the menu, imulsion.
If you know Gears of War, you know that imulsion is what causes locusts to go lambent (and harder to kill). It’s a yellow glowing substance and it kind of reminds me of our brandy slush. So I just had to make brandy slush, with an incognito name of course.
This drink is delicious, it’s definitely more of a summer drink, but it’s so good that it can definitely be enjoyed year round.
Overall, it was an awesome party and the birthday boy had an excellent time. I only wish I had a picture of myself! I completely forgot. I was wearing as many skull accessories as humanly possible.
