AJ and I (like most Wisconsinites) have a whole lot of German ancestry. So it’s only natural that our favorite restaurant of all time is a German restaurant. Not just any old German restaurant though, Mader’s in Milwaukee.
If you’re ever in the Milwaukee area you have to got to go to Mader’s. They have the best authentic German dishes, and to my relief the whole restaurant actually doesn’t smell like sauerkraut as I had feared. If not for the food, you need to see their $3 million dollar art collection (our favorites are the medieval suits of armor and weapons.) Don’t forget the beer, it’s basically a requirement to have a stein or maybe a das boot full of one of the on tap beers.
We only go to Mader’s on special occasions, since it is a very pricey restaurant. We normally can’t walk out without spending at least $80 and that doesn’t include the over two hour of driving there and back. We’ve celebrated our 6 month dating anniversary, our babymoon/early 1 year wedding anniversary, and a kid-free Valentine’s Day. We’ve even taken Aliceana to our favorite restaurant for lunch, she really enjoyed it, even their fries rock and the service was excellent. I get a little worried when we bring Aliceana to nicer restaurants, because sometimes the staff can be rude, but at Mader’s even the other waitresses that weren’t waiting on us would stop to have conversations with Aliceana.
So I wanted to recreate my favorite Mader’s dish at home. The Ritter Schnitzel (Pork tenderloin cutlets with black forest mushroom sauce, served on top of garlic mashed potatoes.) It was delicious and will definitely be added to the meal plan rotation.
To make the pork tenderloin, I sliced the tenderloin into thin medallions. I then coated each piece with flour seasoned with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Then fried each piece in hot sunflower oil for 3 minutes on each side. Pretty easy peazy!
Serve the tenderloin on top of garlic mashed potatoes (I made my own with red potatoes whipped with garlic) and serve with the brandy mushroom sauce that you’ll find below.
