Let’s talk about homemade coffee creamer. I love coffee, I can’t start the day without a cup, but I need coffee creamer. I’m definitely not one of those die hard coffee drinkers that can drink it black, but I’m also not exactly a “I’ll have a little coffee with my creamer kind of person either.” I’m definitely a happy medium when it comes to coffee. I know I couldn’t keep drinking store bought coffee creamers though. The grocery store creamers are expensive and they’re essentially just oils and artificial ingredients. That can’t be a good way to start the day. So coffee creamer has officially been added to the list of kitchen staples that we make from scratch every week.

Did I drip coffee all over my mug when taking this picture, yep, of course I did. That’s what happens when you forget to make your creamer until you desperately need it. Luckily this recipe only takes a couple minutes, easy enough to do even when you’re in the trenches with a newborn.
Making your own creamer is easier than you think, and you can add your own spin on it. Right now it’s peppermint mocha season so we add peppermint extract and some of our homemade chocolate syrup to our coffee creamer. Plain vanilla is fantastic too.
Most homemade creamers use evaporated milk, but we created a coffee creamer that uses a combination of milk and heavy cream instead. This works great because I like to have heavy cream on hand to make homemade soups and sauces creamier anyway.
To store our creamer, we use mason jars with these pour spot tops. They’re good refrigerated for about a week.
Ingredients
Method
- Cook milk, heavy cream, sugar and honey on medium high heat, whisk until mixture starts to steam.
- Remove from heat immediately and whisk in the vanilla.
- Store refrigerated in mason jars.
A few variations we’ve tried:
Peppermint mocha: Leave out the honey, add 1 tsp of peppermint extract and whisk in ¼ cup of homemade chocolate syrup.
Cinnamon creamer: Add a cinnamon stick when steaming the mixture together.
Now go make your creamer, and curl up with a good book by a fire to enjoy your cup of coffee! That’s arguably the best way to enjoy a hot cup of coffee, especially when you live in a place that’s as cold and snowy as Wisconsin’s Northwoods.
